In this series of three posts, we ask our new committee members to share their thoughts about why they chose to join the MaWSIG committee. The first post comes from Sandy Millin, Deputy Tech Coordinator.

I’ve been a member of MaWSIG on and off since it first started in 2013. I tried other SIGs, but I just kept coming back, not least because the Pre-Conference Events (PCEs) are so consistently useful. As a fledgling materials writer, I found that MaWSIG helped me to learn the basics of working with publishers, and of maintaining quality in my own self-published work. I don’t think I would have had the confidence to even try self-publishing without hearing about other people’s experiences during PCEs.

I was very happy to see a space come up on the committee. As I move to being fully freelance, I’m going to be able to fit committee duties around my work more flexibly. It’s great to be able to give something back to a SIG that has already given me so much, and to work with a wonderful group of people.

I’m the Deputy Tech Coordinator, working with Nick Tims. We’re currently putting together a new and improved MaWSIG website, and would be really interested to know what you’d like to see on it.

I’m looking forward to working with MaWSIG over the next few years, and to helping the SIG continue to go from strength to strength!
